About

About Carbon Footprint Calculator (Simple)

For most households, three categories drive the bulk of personal carbon emissions, home heating and cooling, vehicle fuel consumption, and long-distance air travel, which together usually outweigh everything else combined, including diet and daily shopping habits. This calculator weighs your electricity bills, mileage, and flight frequency against those known major categories to produce an annual metric-ton estimate you can actually act on.

Free, no sign-up

Most people have a rough intuition that driving and flying matter environmentally, but translating monthly electricity bills, annual mileage, and flight counts into a single comparable number, metric tons of CO2 equivalent, requires converting across very different units, which is exactly the kind of conversion math this calculator handles.

Knowing which category actually dominates your personal footprint matters more than trying to improve everything equally, a household that flies internationally twice a year likely has a bigger lever there than in switching light bulbs, while a household with an older, inefficient furnace has a different priority entirely.

Enter your monthly electricity bill, annual vehicle mileage, flight frequency, and recycling habits. The calculator returns your total estimated annual carbon footprint in metric tons, compared against regional and global averages.

Household energy and travel habits are personal. Everything calculates locally in your browser, with nothing transmitted to a server.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the average carbon footprint per person?

This calculator compares your yearly total with three benchmarks: about 2 tons as a sustainable target, 4.5 tons as the global average, and 15 tons as a typical US or UK level. Your result lands in one of those bands, so you can see how far you are from each.

How does the calculator estimate my emissions?

It adds five parts. Driving counts 0.0004 tons per mile, and each short or medium round-trip flight adds 0.8 tons. Diet adds 1.5 to 3.3 tons and home energy 1.0 to 3.5 tons. A fixed 2.0 tons covers shared services such as infrastructure and goods.

How much CO2 does driving a car produce per year?

At roughly 400 grams of CO2 per mile, the default 8,000 miles a year comes to about 3.2 tons, and 12,000 miles comes to 4.8 tons. The tool uses one average figure for every vehicle, so an efficient hybrid will emit less and a large truck will emit more.

Does what I eat really change my carbon footprint?

Yes. The tool assigns about 1.5 tons a year to a vegan diet, 1.7 to vegetarian, 2.5 to average meat eating, and 3.3 to eating meat almost daily. Moving from heavy to average meat saves about 0.8 tons a year, the same as driving 2,000 fewer miles.

How many trees would offset my carbon footprint?

The calculator divides your total by 22 kg, the CO2 one mature tree absorbs in a year, and rounds up. With the default inputs of 8,000 miles, two flights, and average diet and home use, that gives about 514 trees. Young trees absorb less, so this shows the size of the gap.

How accurate is an online carbon footprint calculator?

It is an estimate built on averages, not a measured audit. This one does not read your electricity bill, car model, or flight distance, so real numbers can be higher or lower. Use it to compare habits and see which change cuts the most, such as flying less or eating less meat.
