About Markdown to HTML Converter

Markdown lets you write formatted content using plain-text symbols, a hash for a header, asterisks for emphasis, instead of opening and closing HTML tags by hand. A markdown to html converter turns that shorthand into fully valid, semantic markup, which matters since most publishing platforms, documentation tools, and static site generators are built around Markdown but still need to output real HTML in the end.

Free, no sign-up

There isn't one single Markdown spec, which catches people off guard. The original 2004 Markdown is fairly minimal, while CommonMark formalized a stricter, more consistent version of the syntax, and GitHub Flavored Markdown adds its own extensions on top, tables, strikethrough, task lists, and automatic linking of bare URLs among them. This converter supports the common extended syntax, including tables and fenced code blocks, not just the bare-bones original spec.

Headers can be written two different ways in Markdown: ATX style, using one to six hash symbols before the text, or Setext style, underlining the text with = or - characters, though Setext only supports two heading levels. Most modern writing defaults to ATX headers since they're clearer and support all six levels.

Paste your Markdown into the left panel and the HTML output builds on the right as you type. Headers, bold and italic text, ordered and unordered lists, blockquotes, fenced code blocks, and both inline and reference-style links all convert correctly to their semantic HTML equivalents.

The output is unstyled, semantic HTML, h1 through h6 tags, p tags, ul and ol, and so on, with no inline CSS baked in, which is intentional, since your own stylesheet should control how the content actually looks once it's published. Everything converts locally in your browser, so a draft article or internal documentation page never gets uploaded anywhere just to be converted.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Markdown?

It's a lightweight markup language designed to be readable as plain text while still being easy to convert into HTML. Simple symbols, hash marks for headers, asterisks for bold or italic text, do the formatting work that would otherwise require typing out HTML tags directly.

Why write in Markdown instead of a visual editor?

A visual, what-you-see-is-what-you-get editor often generates bloated or inconsistent HTML behind the scenes. Markdown keeps the source clean and platform-independent, so the same file converts predictably no matter where it eventually gets published.

Does this converter handle tables and code blocks?

Yes, it supports the common GitHub Flavored Markdown extensions, including pipe-delimited tables and fenced code blocks marked with triple backticks, converting both into their correct HTML table and pre/code structures.

Does the generated HTML include any styling?

No, the output is semantic, unstyled HTML. How it actually looks on a page is entirely up to your own CSS, which keeps the generated markup lightweight and reusable across different designs.

Is my draft content stored or tracked anywhere?

No, the entire conversion happens through client-side JavaScript in your browser. Nothing you type or paste gets transmitted to or saved on a server.

Can this tool convert HTML back into Markdown?

No, this specific converter only goes one direction, Markdown into HTML. Going the other way requires a separate HTML to Markdown converter, since that conversion involves a different, somewhat lossier process.
