About
About Text to Speech
This tool reads any text out loud. Paste or type your text, pick a voice and press Play Audio. While it speaks, the page switches to a reading view that highlights the current sentence, so you can follow along. That makes it handy for proofreading your own writing, because hearing a sentence often exposes mistakes your eyes skip.
Voices come from your device, not from us, so the list changes with your operating system and browser. Each voice shows up as a card with a display name and its language code. Use the language filter to narrow the list, and click the speaker button on a card to hear a short sample before you choose. The names on the cards are labels the tool assigns, not the voices' official names.
Speed runs from 0.5x to 2x and pitch from 0 to 2. The Normal Pace and Fast presets give you quick starting points. Slower speech helps when you check a script word by word, and faster speech helps when you skim. Pause stops playback, Resume restarts the sentence you paused in from its beginning, and Stop returns you to the editor.
This tool plays audio and doesn't create a downloadable file. If you need an MP3 or WAV, you'll need a different tool or a way to record your device's audio output. Long text plays one sentence at a time, using periods, exclamation marks and question marks as break points, so text without punctuation is read as one long sentence.
Your text goes to your browser's built-in speech engine. Most system voices run on your device. Some browsers also offer online voices, such as certain Chrome voices, which may send your text to the voice provider, so avoid pasting sensitive material if you pick one of those. We do not receive or save your text. The voice cards load small profile pictures from an outside service, and that request never includes your text.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why are the voices different on my phone and my laptop?
The tool lists the voices installed in your browser and operating system. Windows, macOS, Android and iOS each ship different voices, and Chrome adds some of its own. If you install extra voices in your system settings, they may appear here after you reload the page.
Can I download the audio?
No. The tool plays speech through your speakers but doesn't produce an audio file. To keep a recording, you'd need software that records your device's audio output.
Does it support Urdu, Hindi and Arabic?
Only if your device has a voice for that language. Open the language filter: if UR, HI or AR appears in the list, you can use it. If not, install a voice for that language in your system settings. Quality depends entirely on that voice.
How does the sentence highlighting work?
The tool splits your text at periods, exclamation marks and question marks, then speaks one sentence at a time. The sentence being read gets a highlight in the reading view. Text without those marks becomes a single long block.
What happens when I press Pause?
Playback stops, and Resume starts again from the beginning of the sentence you paused in, not from the exact word. Stop ends playback and returns you to the editor.
Are the voice names and gender labels real?
No. The tool gives each installed voice a friendly display name so the list is easier to scan. The gender label is a guess based on the voice's system name, so it can be wrong. Judge a voice by its sample, not its label.
Does it work offline?
With a local system voice, usually yes, once the page has loaded, because the speech engine already lives on your device. Online voices need a connection.
Is there a limit on text length?
The tool sets no limit. It reads one sentence at a time, so long passages work, though some browsers may cut off a very long single sentence. If playback stops partway, press Play again.
